Vitreo Retinal Surgery
What Is Vitreoretinal Surgery?
Vitreoretinal eye surgery includes a group of procedures performed deep inside the eye’s interior with lasers or conventional surgical instruments. As the name implies, this delicate surgery takes place where the gel-like vitreous and light-sensitive membrane (retina) are found. The Bansal eye hospital offers comprehensive facilities for surgical problems of the posterior segment.

Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment describes an emergency situation in which a thin layer of tissue (the retina) at the back of the eye pulls away from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with oxygen and nutrients. Retinal detachment is often accompanied by flashes and floaters in your vision.
Symptoms Of Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment itself is painless. But warning signs almost always appear before it occurs or has advanced, such as
Flashes of light in one or both eyes (photopsia)
Blurred vision
Gradually reduced side (peripheral) vision
A curtain-like shadow over your visual field
Endophthalmitis
Endophthalmitis is an infection of the tissues or fluids inside the eyeball. It is an urgent medical emergency. If you have symptoms, see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Endophthalmitis can blind you if it’s not treated quickly.
Symptoms of Endophthalmitis
The most common symptoms of endophthalmitis are
Eye pain that keeps getting worse after surgery, an injection or injury to the eye
Red eyes
White or yellow pus or discharge from the eyes
Swollen or puffy eyelids
Decreased, blurred or lost vision
As we age, the vitreous ‘gel’ inside the eye naturally shrinks and pulls away from the retina. Occasionally, the vitreous gel can pull on the retina and create a macular hole. In some cases, the fluid that fills the gap left by the vitreous gel may seep through the hole onto the macula, causing blurring and distortion.
Macular Hole Surgery And Repair
A vitrectomy is the most common treatment for macular holes. In this surgery, a retinal specialist removes the vitreous gel to stop it from pulling on the retina. Then the specialist inserts a mixture of air and gas into the space once occupied by the vitreous.
Laser treatment may also be pursued in the setting of retinal break with impending retinal detachment. The definitive treatment for non-clearing vitreous hemorrhage is pars plana vitrectomy, in which the vitreous is surgically removed and replaced with saline.

The lens is a transparent biconvex structure in the eye that, along with the cornea, helps to refract light to be focused on the retina.
